Heating the home in the winter is a top priority, and there are many ways to do it.  Perhaps you have an above ground oil tank that is used in the heating of your home.  This can prove to be an efficient way of heating the home, and if it is stored correctly, is a safe way to do so.  If the tank develops a leak, however, it could become a safety concern.  As a homeowner, what are some things you can look out for to see if there is a leak in the oil tank?

What does the area around the oil tank look like?  If it is kept on grass or vegetation, does it look discolored or dead around the area? Is there a strong smell of oil? Its possible that leaking oil could be causing this.

What kind of condition is the tank itself in?  Does it show any signs that it may have been patched up in the past?  Check the legs of the tank to make sure they are not on an uneven surface or that they are not rusting.  A full oil tank is extremely heavy, so if it does not have adequate support, problems can arise.

Persistent bad weather could begin to play havoc with your oil tank.  Check to see if the tank is not being compromised by snow or ice. If it is underneath an over hanging eave, make sure that constant dripping or even falling ice, is not causing damage.

Check disconnected fuel lines to ensure there are no insect nests etc. that could cause a blockage.

A leaking oil tank could have a very negative impact not only on your property, but also the environment.  If you feel concerned that your oil tank may not be functioning adequately, please feel free to contact us.
